Take advantage of the linux-image-kvm kernel, which is built for KVM virtualisation.

In Ubuntu, for instance, you would run these commands:

apt install linux-image-kvm
apt purge linux-image-generic

Perform cleanup prior to template publication

# clears system logs
journalctl --vacuum-size=1
# wipes user command history
history -c

(as root) rm /root/.bash_history
