Possible Issues You Might Encounter While Using DaDesktop
A small number of applications may need slight tweaks to function perfectly with DaDesktop
Cloning Problems with Fresh Start and Solutions Available
Most programs run normally when set up on a Fresh Start machine in DaDesktop (DD). However, a couple of applications don’t behave as expected after cloning and require additional steps to get them working properly.
- Oracle Database Server – You’ll need to adjust the hostname from the one that’s copied to 127.0.0.1
- Hyper-V server – With the External switch enabled, Hyper-V experiences duplicate MAC addresses when cloned from the FreshStart machine
- Google Chrome – Chrome might not launch correctly on cloned machines if it remains linked to a profile on the Fresh Start machine, especially when the Fresh Start machine wasn’t fully shut down during cloning
- WSL – Windows Subsystem for Linux – During testing, we’ve noticed that DaDesktop machines with WSL aren’t portable. Moving a DaDesktop machine that includes WSL to another DD server prevents it from booting successfully. The cause is unclear, but Windows likely makes assumptions about the hardware it was installed on, and transferring it causes issues. Since WSL is seldom used in training (Linux is typically used directly), this hasn’t been thoroughly investigated yet.
- Issues where a trial software licence uses the MAC address to track the licence – In this scenario, the licence was tied to a MAC address, and after cloning, it appeared already activated and consumed.

Applications that need licences might have to be added after FreshStart is cloned.
Other Problems That Can Arise with DaDesktop
-
Extremely slow VirtualBox when running alongside Hyper-V and VirtualBox (This happens outside DaDesktop as well)
Problem: VirtualBox runs very slowly on Windows machines, making course delivery nearly impossible, but the fix is remarkably easy:
Solution 1: Remove Hyper-V virtualization from Windows:https://www.wintips.org/fix-virtualbox-running-very-slow-in-windows-10-11/
Solution 2: Apply the Hyper-V Server workaround mentioned above; otherwise, duplicate MAC addresses cause sluggish performance, boot issues, and other odd behaviour.
- Cannot type specific characters like Apostrophes / Quotation Marks / Inverted Commas, into a DaDesktop machine.
